Bangalore : The last league tie of the Pepsi IPL-6 between hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Super Kings Chennai (CSK) was reduced to eight overs after heavy rains delayed its start by three hours at the Chinnaswamy stadium late on Saturday.

“Both teams will play eight overs each instead of the stipulated 20 overs as heavy and extended rains put off its start to 11pm instead of the scheduled 8 p.m.,” a Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) told reporter. Of the eight overs, power play has been restricted to two from six and three bowlers will bowl two overs each and one bowler one over each.

Having won the much-delayed toss, Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni opted to field, putting a desperate home team to bat first on a patchy wet outfield. Thousands of frenzied fans, who waited patiently to watch even a truncated game, were excited to see their stars in the middle.

New Delhi : Three Rajasthan Royal players, S. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan, arrested for alleged spot fixing in IPL cricket matches, were Saturday questioned in each others’ presence by Delhi Police, an official said. The suspects confessed to their crime but blamed each other for dragging them into spot fixing, police sources said, adding that investigators have sought from a TV channel raw footage of three cricket matches during which the wrong doings allegedly took place.

Police said they will check the bank accounts of the arrested players and bookies to track the flow of money. ”The first match was spot fixed for Rs.40 lakh and Rs.20 lakh were paid. The second was fixed for Rs.40 lakh out of which Sreesanth got Rs.10 lakh from Jiju Janardhan, a bookie, and the third match was fixed for Rs.60 lakh but no money was delivered,” a police officer said.

He said they had very strong evidence against the players and bookies who indulged in spot fixing willingly for money. The three accused cricketers, presently in police custody, were, during the day, brought before each other in a room in the office of the Special Cell of police in Lodhi Colony in south Delhi and questioned for two hours, the sources said. This was the first occasion when the three players were confronted with each other since their arrest Thursday. They were questioned separately Friday, police said.

The accused’s interrogation was done under the supervision of Special Commissioner of Police S.N. Srivastava, police sources said. During separate interrogation on Saturday, 11 bookies, all of whom are in police custody, were also brought before each other, sources said. On Saturday, Delhi Police approached the SET Max TV channel to get the raw footage of all the three IPL matches in which the alleged spot fixing took place. The matches played were played May 5, May 9 and May 15.

Police said they were sharing the case-related information with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). ”A BCCI investigator today (Saturday) approached us and the information related with the case were shared,” an officer said. Police said seven bookies were arrested from Delhi and Gurgaon while the others from Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Bookie Ashwani Agarwal was arrested from Gurgaon. On his instance Amit Gupta, Ramakant, Love Garg and Ajay Goel were arrested from Delhi. Delhi Police also conducted raids in several cities including Mumbai and Ahmedabad to track the money trail in connection with the alleged spot fixing racket, sources said. A team of Delhi police went to the house of Chandila in Faridabad in Haryana. However, his family members were not present and the house was locked. After the alleged fixing, the first installment of money was delivered at Chandila’s house, an officer said.

The three cricketers and 11 bookies, who are in five days police custody, were charged under penal provisions for cheating and criminal conspiracy. If cheating charges against the accused are proved, they may get a maximum punishment of seven years each. Delhi Police arrested the three players in a post-midnight operation in Mumbai 16 May for spot fixing in IPL matches for payments of upto Rs.60 lakh, just for giving away a pre-determined number of runs in an over. Over the recovery and arrests made by Mumbai Police in the , a Delhi Police official said they have recovered all the things which were required to make the case against the accused strong. The Delhi official said they will soon contact their counterparts in Mumbai. Mumbai police have seized the mobiles, iPhones, laptops, data cards and other personal things allegedly belonging to Sreesanth and Jiju from a hotel in that city. -

Mumbai/New Delhi : The probe into the IPL spot-match fixing scam was intensified Saturday with Mumbai police seizing the mobiles, iPhones and laptops of cricketer S.Sreesanth and his relative, bookie Jiju Janardhan while the three arrested players were jointly quizzed. Police are also scanning the diaries of Sreesanth which contain significant information pertaining to the scam, Mumbai Police’s Joint Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy, who is spearheading the investigations, told media persons in Mumbai.

One more bookie, Pravin Bera, was arrested from Mumbai Saturday, taking the total number of bookies arrested from the city and other parts of the country to 12, besides the three cricketers – Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan, all playing for the Rajasthan Royals. Roy said that Mumbai police are contemplating seeking custodial investigation of the three cricketers who were nabbed from a Mumbai five-star hotel three days ago, blowing the lid off the sensational scam.

Police also searched the room in a five-star hotel in south Mumbai where Sreesanth and Janardhan were living, he said. ”We are also scanning the CCTV footage of the hotel to find out who they met during their stay there, their movements, and visitors who called on them,” Roy said, adding that police will reconstruct the sequence of events in the hotel May 14/15 till Sreesanth’s arrest.

Besides Bera, bookies Ramesh Vyas, Pankaj Shah alias Lotus, Ashok Vyas, Pandurang Kadam, Niraj Shah have been arrested so far from Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Police had raided bookie Vyas’s office in Kalbadevi and he was nabbed May 14, the same night when the cricketer trio was picked up by Delhi Police.

From Vyas, the investigators came across a rich haul of 92 mobile phone, 18 SIM cards, account books, laptops, a TV set, satellite dish etc, ”Thirty of the mobile phones were used to make conference calls to bookies in India, Pakistan and Dubai by Vyas, who was in touch with all the bookies and had also given some money to them,” Roy revealed. ”We have several more bookies wanted in connection with this scam,” he said, hinting at more arrests. In New Delhi, the three arrested players were again questioned but now in each others’ presence, an official said. The suspects confessed their crime but blamed each other for dragging them into spot fixing, police sources said. The three were brought before each other in a room in the office of the Special Cell of police in Lodhi Colony in south Delhi and questioned for two hours, the sources said.

This was the first occasion when the three players were confronted with each other. They were questioned separately Friday, police said. The accused’s interrogation was done under the supervision of Special Commissioner of Police S.N. Srivastava, police sources said. The three were confronted with the nabbed bookies, audio recordings and other material evidence gathered by the investigators into the scam. During separate interrogation Saturday, 11 bookies, all of whom are in police custody, were also brought before each other, sources said.

Delhi Police also conducted raids in several cities including Mumbai and Ahmedabad to track the money trail in connection with the alleged spot fixing racket, sources said. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Police said they expect to achieve a breakthrough soon in the cricket betting case in which six bookies were arrested Friday. ”We expect to achieve break through in the case soon. We also raided three premises here Saturday,” a senior official of at Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CBCID), who did not want to be named, told reporter. Mumbai police are meanwhile keen to invoke the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on all the accused, currently facing charges for cheating and criminal conspiracy, after complying with the necessary pre-conditions for this law, Roy said. In a post-midnight swoop Wednesday, a team of Delhi Police’s Special Cell had arrested the three cricketers for their alleged involvement in spot fixing in the ongoing IPL-6 season for payments of upto Rs.6 million for allowing a pre-determined number of runs in an over. Investigators believe that fixing of different types may be prevalent in other matches in the current IPL and also in the earlier IPLs.

Dharamsala : Playing their final league match, Kings XI Punjab finished on a winning note by beating table-toppers Mumbai Indians by 50 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash here at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Saturday. It was also the last match of their captain, Adam Gilchrist, who has announced his retirement from the format.

Put into bat, the home team posted a challenging total of 183/8 with the help of two fantastic knocks from Azhar Mahmood (80) and Shaun Marsh (63). In reply, the Indians could only manage 133 in 19.1 overs with none of the batsmen playing an anchor’s knock. With this win, the Punjab-based team finished their IPL campaign sixth with 16 points, thus not qualifying for the playoffs. Kings XI lost Gilchrist (5) and Mandeep Singh (1) cheaply by the third over which put the hosts in a spot of bother but Mahmood and Marsh struck a 148-run third wicket partnership which set up their innings.

The former Pakistani all-rounder hit eight boundaries and four sixes in his 44-ball knock while Australia’s Marsh scored 11 boundaries all around the scenic ground, located in the middle of the snow-covered peaks. The lower order failed to capitalise on the partnership in the last few overs which is why they could not reach 200. But Manan Vohra played an important 8-ball 20-run cameo which included three boundaries and one huge six propelling the Punjab-based team to a par-180 score.

Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga was the pick of the bowlers picking up three wickets from his four overs but also went for 39 runs at 9.75 runs per over. Mumbai, having already qualified for the playoffs, rested lead pacer Mitchell Johnson, who gave way way to Nathan Coulter-Nile, who made his IPL debut. In reply and with the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, the Mumbai Indian batsmen could not strike a long-enough partnership and kept losing wickets at regular intervals to hand the game to Kings XI. Tendulkar, who missed the last match too, is currently nursing a hand injury. Aditya Tare (22), Ambati Rayudu (26), Rohit Sharma (25) and Kieron Pollard (22) got starts but could not convert them into much-needed big-scores to overcome the Punjab total.

Mumbai were nine wickets down when Dhawal Kulkarni, who got injured while bowling, did not come out to match and was stated to be absent hurt, giving the match to Punjab. In a surprise, Kings XI skipper Gilchrist, already knowing that they had won the match decided to bowl the last over and picked up a wicket on the first ball that of Harbhajan Singh (5), who was caught at long-on.

Praveen Kumar, though took only wicket, was among the best bowlers by bowling a tight line and not allowing the Indians to score heavily off him. Mahmood also shone with ball taking 2/24 in his quota of four overs. Sandeep Sharma and Piyush Chawla also took two wickets each while Parvinder Awana clinched one.

New Delhi : For fast bowler S. Sreesanth, it was two days of sleepless nights and no bath as the disgraced cricketer was not “comfortable” with the bathroom. Alone in the small cell of the Delhi Police, he mostly looks glum, depressed and breaks down often during questioning, police sources said Saturday.

On the second day of questioning by the interrogators of the Delhi Police Special Cell, which busted the spot fixing scandal late Wednesday night after they arrested Sreesanth and his two Rajasthan Royals teammates Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila and 11 bookies, Sreesanth again broke down, police said. ”On the first day, he shared the cell with his teammates. But now he is alone. He has not slept for the past two days,” the official told reporter under condition of anonymity. A city court Thursday granted five days custody of all the 14 accused to the police.

“When we again questioned him today (Saturday) about his involvement in spot fixing, he broke down. He looks very glum, depressed and often cries,” said the official, who is among those questioning the cricketer at the Lodhi Colony office of the special cell. ”When we are not questioning him, he behaves normally and speaks to us. And laughs sometimes. Then he sobers up when he realises where he is,” the officer added. ”As he was not comfortable with the bathroom of the police cell, he did not take bath,” the officer said.

Sreesanth, 30, who had refused dinner on the first night of his stay in the police custody Thursday night, had rajma-chawal the next day. “All the players are now having regular food,” the officier added. The police also confronted him with his two teammates on Saturday. Sreesanth, considered to be one of the most colourful cricketer in the Indian cricket team, has confessed to him crime. Mumbai police Saturday also seized Sreesanth’s laptop, i-pad, phones, cash and diaries after they raided a hotel where the cricketer was staying for sometime.

The suspects confessed their crime but blamed each other for dragging them into spot fixing, police sources said. The accused cricketers, who are in police custody, were brought before each other in a room in the office of the Special Cell of police in Lodhi Colony in south Delhi and questioned for two hours, the sources said. This was the first occasion when the three players were confronted with each other for since their arrest Thursday. They were questioned separately on Friday, police said.

The accused’s interrogation was done under the supervision of Special Commissioner of Police S.N. Srivastava, police sources said. During separate interrogation Saturday, 11 bookies, all of whom are in police custody, were also brought before each other, sources said. Delhi Police also conducted raids in several cities including Mumbai and Ahmedabad to track the money trail in connection with the alleged spot fixing racket, sources said.

Moscow: Hours after winning the World Boxing Association (WBA) cruiserweight title, Guillermo Jones was hit by a scandal when a former champion accused him of doping to give himself unnatural stamina in the knockout win over Denis Lebedev.

Panamanian fighter Jones, 41, reclaimed the belt when the referee stopped the fight in the 11th round after Lebedev was knocked down Friday.

At the time, the Russian was leading on all three scorecards, and had landed some heavy shots on Jones despite fighting with a bruise the size of a tennis ball around his right eye.

Jones’ fortitude in resisting Lebedev’s punches was abnormal, said former International Boxing Organisation super bantamweight champion Dmitry Bakhtin, who was ringside here.

“I reckon that Jones was on something. Obviously the medical commission needs to get involved. The tests will show everything,” said Bakhtin, who retired unbeaten in March. He suggested that Jones would have fallen under Lebedev’s onslaught unless he had used banned substances.

After the fight, some reports claimed Jones had refused to take a scheduled doping test, but WBA executive Gilberto Mendoza insisted the new champion had done so.

“There is a false report stating @felinojones refused the doping test. I just spoke with WBA supervisor who guaranteed it was done,” he said on Twitter.

Jones himself put his victory down to determination, revealing that he told himself he was a tiger during the fight to increase his motivation.

The Panamanian’s punch resistance was widely praised, including by WBA heavyweight regular champion Alexander Povetkin.

“Myself, I went crazy with how Jones was taking those shots and not falling, especially because there wasn’t a bruise on his face,” he said. “That definitely affected Denis psychologically.”

Jones’ victory sees him improve to a 39-3 record with two draws and 31 knockout wins, while Lebedev slips to 25-2.

New Delhi: A day after they arrested three bowlers of the Rajasthan Royals, including India pacer S Sreesanth, and 11 others for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing in Indian Premier League matches, Delhi Police officers said they were also probing if players of other IPL teams were involved in the betting racket.

Officers linked to the probe said names of some bowlers of other teams came up during questioning of the arrested cricketers and bookies. The officers clarified that at this stage they had no evidence of the involvement of other players but they would certainly widen the probe.

A bookie who had given police the slip at a New Delhi hotel was detained on Friday. The bookie, identified as Mahender alias Bhupender of Faridabad, had walked past Special Cell officers when they reached the hotel.

Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila, who were remanded in police custody for five days after they were arrested in Mumbai and flown to Delhi, have been questioned by Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar. A police officer claimed that the trio admitted to making a “mistake” but this was promptly rejected by their lawyers who said the players had been framed and the police had no case.

The police are still to recover Rs 1.2 crore in cash that allegedly changed hands between the bookies and the three bowlers. Police said they would recover the cash very soon.

According to police, Amit Singh, who played for Rajasthan Royals earlier and is one of the 14 to be arrested, told his interrogators that a 2012 IPL season match of the team too had been fixed — a claim that police will look into.
